Lady Chargers roll past West Point

Led by Ciara Steward in the pitching circle and Nikki Grilliette at the plate, the Oxford Lady Chargers defeated West Point 5-1.

Grilliette drove in Oxford’s first run of the game with a two-strike, two-out double in the first inning. She then hit a home run in the third and finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles overall. Steward finished with 11 strikeouts and according to coach Steve Blackmon, had good command all night long. Blackmon credited the play of second baseman Brandy Batoon, who ended a West Point scoring chance with the catch of a pop out in shallow center field.  Blackmon said two or possibly three runs would have scored if the ball had dropped in. Oxford, which has now surpassed its win total from last season with 4, returns to action tonight at Water Valley beginning with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. (March 27, 2013, Page 9)
