Oxford Chargers start season with 1-1 mark

Oxford’s baseball team rebounded from a 7-6 loss to Columbus in the season opener to defeat Pontotoc 5-3 in New Albany.

The Chargers led Columbus 6-0 before giving up one run in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth to suffer the setback. Hunter Roth started for the Chargers in the opener, while Steven Whitfield pitched against PHS. Oxford trailed Pontotoc 3-1 before going ahead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Chargers had four hits overall in the win over Pontotoc. Whitfield garnered the complete-game victory and had two RBIs. Henry Webb and Hunter Roth also drove in runs. Oxford returns to action today against North Pontotoc in the Pontotoc Tournament. (February 25, 2013, Page 3B)
