‘Dores hang on to defeat Vikings

It took some late game heroics, but the Lafayette Commodores closed their Division 2-4A with a 54-47 victory against visiting North Pontotoc on Monday.

With the win, Lafayette will play North Pontotoc in the first round of the region tournament next Tuesday.

After trailing for much of the first half, Lafayette actually surged ahead in the third quarter.

The Vikings (14-10 overall, 1-4 Region 2-4A) seemed to show some fight in the final frame and pulled within three (42-39) of Lafayette with just over three minutes remaining.

Lafayette almost immediately responded with two made free throws from Joshua Barry and a converted basket by Cam Pettis to push its lead back to seven.

Down the stretch, while NPHS attempted to fight back into the game, the Commodores (9-7, 2-3) never folded.
