Chargers hold on to top North Pontotoc

Two postponed dates in the Pontotoc Tournament weren’t enough to deter the Oxford Chargers from earning their second win of the 2013 season Wednesday. The Chargers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on North Pontotoc in the first inning and then broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh en route to a 5-4 win over the Vikings at Pontotoc High.

Jason Barber was the hero for the Chargers in the victory as he led the team with two hits and two RBIs and logged three innings of work as the starting pitcher. Houston Roth then pitched the next three innings before his older brother, Hunter, picked up the save for the Chargers.

Barber finished with five strikeouts against no walks. Oxford used five walks by the Vikings to its advantage in the win. Hunter Roth led the team in that category with two. Henry Webb, Hunter Roth and Pittman Phillips each had a hit, while Hunter Roth, Jack McClure and Steven Whitfield each drove in a run.

Oxford will return to action Friday against Tupelo in the Amory Tournament. (February 28, 2013, Page 9)
