CANTON — Oxford’s well designed game plan was executed by the Lady Chargers the way coach Shayne Linzy was hoping for three plus quarters Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Chargers, the overall size and athleticism of the Canton Lady Tigers was too much to overcome in the end.
Oxford’s reign as the MHSAA Class 5A state champion came to an end on the road as CHS wore down the Lady Chargers en route to a 54-41 playoff win in a game that was much closer than the score indicated.
The Lady Chargers (20-7 overall) led Canton 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, while the game was tied at 18 at the half. Canton (26-3) was down 35-30 at the end of the third after being down as much as seven. That’s when the game turned for the Lady Chargers, who despite playing great on defense and having the lead, struggled to score once Canton gained a little momentum.
