On the same day that the Ole Miss football program officially announced the transfer of former Southern Miss quarterback and Toronto Blue Jays third-round pick Anthony Alford, news surfaced that another two-sport standout, Senquez Golson, will now focus solely on football.
Golson got his freshman baseball campaign off to a quick start —after not going through fall ball with the Diamond Rebels due to football — but saw his playing time dwindle as the season progressed and did not make the Rebels’ postseason roster.
While Golson hit just .204 in 54 at-bats as a freshman, the Pascagoula native still made plenty of baseball-related headlines. Prior to his hot start, Golson, an eighth-round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft, turned down a reported $1.3 million signing bonus (spread out over five years) from the Boston Red Sox to play both sports at Ole Miss. Golson also had the game-winning hit that lifted Ole Miss to a series-clinching win against then-No. 1 Florida.
