Lafayette earns road sweep of Cleveland

Both of Lafayette’s soccer teams took big steps in relation to its postseason future with two wins over Cleveland on Friday night. The Lady ‘Dores won 5-1 thanks to five goals scored by Alley Houghton.

The ‘Dores then took the nightcap with a 4-3 win that was decided in a shootout. Lafayette and Cleveland ended regulation in a 2-2 tie. Austin Fikes led Lafayette with three goals in the win. Lafayette had 26 shots on goal, while goalie Jordan Willms finished with nine saves. Casey Vaughn was also credited with an assist.

LHS coach Gene Anderson was pleased with how his team controlled the ball and competed all game. There were no goals scored in overtime but Anderson said his team felt confident going into the decisive shootout. After allowing Cleveland to score on the first kick, Willms recorded back-to-back saves. Fikes scored first for Lafayette and was then followed by Jason Reveles and Michael Hudgins.

Brian Leyva then won the game for Lafayette following a made goal for Cleveland.
