Lady ‘Dores, ‘Dores fare well in opening meet

Lafayette’s powerlifting teams got their respective seasons off to a good start Saturday in the Pontotoc Invitational. The Lady Commodores won the meet over six other teams, while the Commodores finished second.

Cate Clay, Meghan Sharp, Sparkle Duncan and Ashley Carter all finished in first place for the Lady Commodores. Megan Wooten, Jada McIntosh, Kendall White and Shawdna Pettis all finished second in their respective weight class.

Coach Sandra Smith was pleased with Carter’s 400 pound deadlift, while all the girls exceeded her expectations in the first meet of the year. Carter finished with a total of 890 pounds lifted in three events that also include bench press and squat. The Commodores, meanwhile, missed first place by four points, according to coach Cody Stubblefield.

Eric Lewis led LHS by finishing first in the 165 class with a 1,035 pound total. Austin Wren finished second in the 114-pound class with a 395 total. Tyler Kemp was second in the 123 class with a 620. Malik Vaughn was second in the 132 with a 720. Tay Herod was second in the 165 class with a 1,005.

Kalen Coleman was second in the 198 class with a 1,245. Alec Michael was third in the 220 class with a 1,135. Cortez Coleman was second in the 242 class with a 1,335. Stephen Cook finished fourth in the 275 class with a 1,170, while Trae Williams was third in the 275 with a 1,285. Rounding out the competitors for Lafayette was Eli Johnson, who finished second in the 308 class with a 1,195. (January 21, 2013, Page 11)
