Young Chargers lead way to Round 1 win

BLOG: With several key players sidelined due to injury, Oxford turned to its underclassmen to lead the way Friday.

Paced by two touchdown runs of 1 and 5 yards by sophomore running back Courtland Barnes, the Chargers defeated Provine 27-14 in the first round of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs.

Defensively, sophomore cornerback K.T. McCollin pulled down three interceptions and freshman defensive back D.K. Metcalf intercepted the Rams a fourth time.

Junior kicker Cody Mills chipped in two field goals (28, 20) and sophomore fullback Collin Le scored on a 16-yard run to cap Oxford’s scoring on the evening.

Next up for the Chargers (11-1) is a meeting with Starkville. The Yellow Jackets knocked off Saltillo 45-7 Friday.
