CLEVELAND — The Water Valley Blue Devils entered the “birthplace of blues” last Friday night and now have the experience to write their own song filled with heartache and sorrow.
For the second consecutive season, a loss to Cleveland East Side ended Water Valley’s run in the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs, as the Trojans defeated the Blue Devils 26-24 in their second round matchup at Leroy Byars Field.
Trailing 24-18, the Trojans’ Jaylon Thomas found Barron Burns wide open down the right sideline on an 84-yard halfback pass to tie the game with 2:51 to play in the contest. Burns’ successful run on the ensuing 2-point conversion play put CES ahead for good.
Water Valley’s James Washington muffed the ensuing kickoff, hurting the chances at a Blue Devils’ comeback as the Trojans ran out the clock after picking up 19 yards on a fourth-and-6 play from the WVHS 29-yard line. (November 12, 2012, Page 5B)
