SPORTS BLOG: CLEVELAND — For the consecutive second season, a loss to Cleveland East Side ended Water Valley’s run in the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs, as the Trojans defeated the Blue Devils 26-24 in their second round matchup Friday night at Leroy Byars Field.
The Trojans used an 84-yard halfback pass from Jaylon Thomas to Barron Burns for the go-ahead score with 2:51 to play in the contest.
Water Valley’s James Washington muffed the ensuing kickoff, hurting chances at a Blue Devils’ comeback as the Trojans ran out the clock the rest of the way.
After barely seeing the field in the first half, Water Valley’s offense developed momentum in the third quarter when the Blue Devils struck for two scores that were a little more than one minute apart.
WVHS quarterback E.J. Bounds capped off a drive in which he started with a 49-yard gain with a 5-yard score with 3:37 left in the third quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Water Valley’s L.J. Hawkins recovered the return after Blue Devils’ kicker Alex Robles placed the ball in between two Trojans’ return lines.
Bounds hit Hawkins three plays later for a 12-yard score to put Water Valley ahead 21-18 with 2:25 to play in the third quarter.
After forcing the Trojans to go three-and-out, Water Valley pieced together a 10-play drive that culminated with a Robles field goal from 37 yards out.
The Trojans led 12-7 at halftime, despite running almost three times as many plays as the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils answered the Trojans’ opening scoring drive when Bounds connected with T.T. Person for a 30-yard touchdown pass to put WVHS ahead 7-6 with 3:15 left in the opening quarter.
