The Oxford boys improved to 2-0-1 on the season with a convincing 4-1 victory at Corinth Tuesday. Baxter Elliott deposited two goals, while Eddy Terry and Hayden Stewart each chipped in one goal.
During the victory, goalie Henry Webb was shot with an apparent high-powered BB gun, according to coach Jamie Perkins. Webb told Perkins he heard an initial shot go over his head while a second shot hit him in the right shoulder about 10 minutes into the second half. Perkins said play was stopped and Corinth administrators and security checked the woods behind the goal where Webb was for any suspicious activity.
Perkins talked with the officials and told them that if another one of his players was shot, he felt like it would be best for the match to end. Fortunately for the Chargers — and the Warriors — no other shots were fired and no one was hurt.
Perkins credited Corinth officials for their part in handling the situation that could have ended up with a player or individual being seriously hurt.
