Lafayette’s Hamann makes history

CLINTON — The Lafayette girls, sparked by individual gold medalist Peyton Hamann and two others in the top six performers, claimed third place in the MHSAA Class 4A state cross-country meet held Saturday at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails.

The Oxford Chargers came in third in the Class 5A boys state cross-country meet, while the OHS girls and Lafayette boys each finished fourth in their team competitions.

Hamann outran Corinth’s Yvette Evans up the final hill to win the Class 4A girls’ individual title. Hamann finished with a time of 15 minutes, 28.7 seconds, just one second faster than Evans. LHS teammates Esmeralda Rodriguez (fourth, 16:00.3) and Rachel Starnes (sixth, 16:07.2) had strong races to help the Lady Commodores to their third-place finish. (November 12, 2012, Page 4B)
