SPORTS BLOG: A swarming defense and a big night from quarterback Brandon Mack led to Lafayette knocking off Greenwood 24-7 Friday night at William L. Buford Stadium in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
The win sets up a road game with a familiar opponent in the No. 1 seed from Region 4 Noxubee County, who won its first-round matchup 42-6 against Shannon.
After a slow start, the LHS (10-2 overall) defense started getting pressure on Bulldogs’ quarterback Kwandra Griggs late in the first half to finish with four sacks and several hurries on the night.
The Dores’ defense carried the momentum of the end of the first half into the third quarter and allowed only one first down until less than four minutes to play in the contest.
Mack led all rushers on the ground with 204 yards on 25 carries. The senior signal-caller scored from eight yards out on the ‘Dores second drive of the third quarter and also connected with D.K. Buford on a 43-yard pass with 4:39 left in the first half to give LHS a 7-0 lead.
Josh Barry scored on a 20-yard run on the Commodores opening drive of the second half, and Ryan Holland added a 26-yard field goal with 11:06 left in the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring for the night.
