At The Gathering, a November fencing classic, several Oxford fencers took top honors. In the 15-and-up age group, Oxford freshman Issac Manly took first place, outscoring opponents from Memphis, Collierville Academy (Tenn.), Christian Brothers (Memphis), Saint George (Memphis) and Jackson.
In the men’s 14-and-under, Maxmillian Keene took gold over Jake Riffe, the silver medalist.
Elias Addy, fencing for the Oxford Park Commission, took gold in the boy’s 12-and-under, while Lydia Supple of Oxford Middle School placed first in the girl’s 12-and-under.
In the girl’s 10-and-under category, Aubrey Best took gold in a close contest with Ashni Brown-Talib.
Meghan Vogt, competing for New Orleans, placed third in the U-10 category.
The athletes are trained by coaches Dr. John Matthews, Walter Flaschka and Margarette Davis at Oxford Fencers, Inc., a United States Fencing Association (USFA) affiliate.
The fencers will return to action Dec. 1 in the Houston Region 5 youth qualifier. (November 27, 2012, Page 7)
