No. 6 Chargers fall to No. 8 West Point

BLOG — Oxford’s goal of winning the Region 1-5A title and earning the top seed in the upcoming 5A playoffs was denied by West Point Friday night at McAllester Field.

The sixth-ranked Chargers lost 35-21 to the No. 8 Green Wave in a game that decided the title and playoff seeding for both teams. West Point (8-2 overall, 6-0 in 1-5A) scored on the first offensive snap for either team when quarterback Delentez Lane hooked up with wide receiver Terence Minor on a 71-yard touchdown.

Oxford (9-1, 5-1) got on the board for the first time three minutes later when quarterback Parker Adamson completed a screen pass to wide receiver Nick Brown, who was able to weave his way around Green Wave defenders for an 87-yard touchdown.

The Chargers then went ahead 14-7 with 3:45 left in the quarter when Adamson hooked up with Brown again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone.

As good as the first quarter was for the Chargers, the second was just as bad for them. West Point scored 28 unanswered points in the quarter to take a 35-14 lead at halftime.

Lane ran for two touchdowns, including one that covered 85 yards, to pace the Green Wave on offense. West Point didn’t score again after the second quarter but its defense didn’t yield another score until late in the fourth quarter when the contest was decided.

Oxford will close out its regular season Friday on the road at Clarksdale.
