Lafayette’s boys cross country team finished fifth out of 21 teams that competed in the Southern Tees Challenge held Saturday at the New Albany Sportsplex. All five runners that competed for the Commodores finished the course in under 21 minutes.
Ivan Lopez led the way with a time of 19 minutes, 1 second, which was good for eighth-place. He was followed by Travis Lyles, Sam Faulkner, T.J. Hollis and Jacob Roberts. The middle school Commodores were led by Nick Hollis, who finished 12th overall. Chris Gunter (14), Andrew Cox (23), Foster Roush (26), John Tate Roberts (29) and Gary Dixon (39) all competed. The Commodores finished fourth out of 22 teams. Lafayette didn’t field a full varsity team. Peyton Hamann and Esmeralda Rodriguez both finished first and second in the 4K race with times of 16:40 and 16:41. The junior varsity girls were led by Julianna Mikell’s first-place finish (19:01). Abby Davis finished seventh, Lily McElreath was 15th, while Anja Diercks was 23rd.
“We’re getting across the board. Our few girls simply dominated their races. Now our boys are running better. Our junior high boys are running with more confidence and our junior high girls are trying to get ready to move up to help the varsity at the state meet. I’d say we’re on schedule for a good finish to the season,” LHS coach Ben Mikell said. (October 1, 2012, Page 4B)
