BLOG: NETTLETON — The Blue Devils overcame a premature deficit and sluggish start to knock off the Nettleton Tigers 33-13 Friday night.
With starters E.J. Bounds, Jeoffrey Gordon and Taylor Edwards back in the lineup together for the first time in weeks, it took Water Valley (8-1 overall, 3-0 Region 2-3A) a few series for the road squad to get going.
After Nettleton (1-8, 0-3) scored on its first drive of the game, Water Valley responded by scoring 20 unanswered points in the second quarter.
Gordon found the end zone on a 6-yard run wt the 10:43 mark of the second frame. Bounds then scored on a 1-yard dive at the 5:12 mark and completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to receiver L.J. Hawkins with 58 seconds remaining before the half.
Nettleton struck back mid-way through the third on a 55-yard touchdown pass down the Tigers’ sideline, but Water Valley tacked on 13 more points in the fourth quarter on another 1-yard run by Bounds and a 2-yard run by Gordon to put the game away.
Bounds ended up completing 6 of 9 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown, while Gordon led the Devils with 205 yards rushing on 25 carries.
The Blue Devils return to action next Friday at Aberdeen in a game that could decide the region.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 3-0), knocked off Mooreville 52-6 Friday.
