Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team took a huge step to securing the Tri-Lakes Conference title Tuesday by posting a 30-14 win over Batesville at William L. Buford Stadium. The victory improved the Commodores to 5-2 overall and an even more important 3-0 in the conference with one game left to play against Grenada. The Commodores were never threatened by the Tigers in the game as Atarius Owens got them on the scoreboard first with a 16-yard run at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter.
Kyler Campbell then added the 2-point conversion run. Owens made it 14-0 on a 5-yard run just before the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Batesville cut the deficit to eight points on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The Commodores built on their 14-6 lead just before the break with a 3-yard run from Dylan Woods. Campbell added the 2-point run. In the third quarter, Tyler Williams scored on an 8-yard run and then added the 2-point conversion.
Coach Glenn Williams credited the play of Xavier Martin and Michael Hendricks for an interception and fumble recovery. Lafayette’s seventh grade lost 22-0 to Batesville in the first game of the doubleheader. Williams said his offense advanced into the red zone twice and continued to show improvement. Both teams will return to action against Grenada Tuesday at home starting with the seventh-grade game at 5 p.m. (October 17, 2012, Page 7)
