Chargers, Lady Chargers compete at Jesse Owens

Both Oxford High teams competed in the annual Jesse Owens Classic held in Oakville, Ala., this past weekend. Over 5,500 runners competed in the event.

Tristan Orman led the Chargers with a time of 18 minutes, 09.76 seconds. Pruitt Griffin (19:04) and David Dennis (19:46) finished second and third on the team. Top finishers for the Lady Chargers were Callie Mayo with a 20:50, Emily Hankins (20:52) and Swayze Elliott. All three Lady Chargers finished in the top 50 with Mayo and Hankins finishing 31st and 32nd. Over 300 runners competed in the race.

“The girls ran a very good race even though the course was horrible due to rain the night before and throughout the day,” OHS coach Chris Patton said. “The boys ran in the sixth race of the day, so by the time they ran, the conditions were horrible. We had guys who took a couple falls throughout the race and that really affected our times.” (October 11, 2012, Page 9)
