WEST POINT — One quarter, one important quarter, is all that separated the Oxford Chargers and West Point Green Wave at McCallister Field Friday night. In a game that decided the overall Region 1-5A champion, both teams played even for the majority of the contest.
Unfortunately for the No. 6 Chargers, a 28-point explosion by the Green Wave in the second quarter resulted in a 35-21 victory and ended the Chargers’ nine-game winning streak. Up 14-7 after the first quarter, the Chargers (9-1 overall, 5-1 in 1-5A) were unable to slow West Point (8-2, 6-0) in the subsequent 12-minute period. The Green Wave scored on long drives, short drives and big plays, including one from quarterback Delentez Lane, who seemingly broke the Chargers’ back with an 85-yard touchdown run to put the Wave up 35-14.
