Blue Devils buck Mustangs with convincing win

SPORTS BLOG: WATER VALLEY — A cold night didn’t stop Water Valley from starting hot, as the Blue Devils defeated Mantachie 56-3 Friday night at Bobby Clark Field to close out the regular season.

Water Valley, which finished as the No. 2 seed in Region 2-3A, will host the No. 3 seed of Region 3-3A next Friday night in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Blue Devils (9-2 overall, 4-1 in region play) scored on their first four possessions of the game to take a 27-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

WVHS quarterback E.J. Bounds scored on runs of 17 and 19 yards, and threw a 30-yard TD pass to Jarard Williams, before Williams added a 40-yard rushing touchdown to close out the scoring of the opening quarter.

Williams added a 25-yard scoring run in the second quarter and Brandon Bounds scored on a 56-yard run to give the Blue Devils a 41-3 halftime lead.

Elijah Rogers scored on the third play of the second half with a 61-yard run and Robert Mays ran for a 49-yard TD with 1:08 left in the game to conclude the scoring for the night.
