Oxford’s Chargers traveled to Grenada and earned a hard-fought 12-6 win over Grenada Thursday evening. The Chargers (3-0-1 overall) gave Grenada its first loss of the season.
Oxford struggled on offense compared to the first three games of the season, but quarterback Drew Bianco was able to lead the team on two meaningful drives that produced points. Bianco connected with Hiram Wadlington on a short pass that he turned into a 55-yard touchdown. Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said scoring first was important due to the running clock that was being used. C.J. Terrell had a gain of 30 yards to start another scoring drive, while Bianco hooked up with Wadlington for another scoring throw just before the half. The Chargers then relied on their defense to preserve the victory in the second half. Hardwick said the effort may have been the best so far for the defense and he credited the play of Hogan Linzy at end, Jacob Melendez and Will Hollingsworth at tackle, Quentin Wilfawn and Jacquanzi Webb at linebacker and Nasiah Stamps and Terrell at cornerback. Offensively, Hardwick praised the play of Jay Frierson, Joe O’Keefe, Carlos Moreno, Barry Flowers and Jacquanzi Johnson. Oxford will return to action Tuesday at South Panola.
