The Lafayette Middle School football teams split a pair of games with South Panola in Batesville on Tuesday night. The seventh-grade Tigers beat Lafayette 16-0, while the older Commodores won 18-12 thanks to a great individual night from Atarius Owens, who scored all three touchdowns in the victory. Owens’ last touchdown covered 31 yards and it came with just seven seconds left in the game and the scored tied 12-12. South Panola had scored its last touchdown with just two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Owens scored his touchdown on a 31-yard run at the 3:30 mark of the second quarter and his second on a 70-yard run with 4:30 left in the third.
The eighth-graders improved to 2-2. Coach Glenn Williams said his seventh-grade Commodores (1-3) played a little better in the second half compared to the first.
Lafayette will be off this upcoming week before resuming play in Tri-Lakes Conference action. (September 19, 2012, Page 7)
