Led by another great defensive effort, the Oxford seventh-grade Chargers defeated South Panola 12-0 in Batesville Tuesday night. Oxford’s eighth graders also posted a 34-0 win over Batesville to improve to 5-0 on the year.
It was the Tri-Lakes Conference opener for Oxford, who will compete against Grenada, Lafayette, South Panola and Senatobia for a title this fall. Oxford swept the season series with the Tigers, who lost 14-8 to Oxford’s seventh grade just a few weeks. Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said it was the best game of the season and praised the entire defense that included Hogan Linzy and Andres Pegues at end, Jacob Melendez, Peyton Schiller, Will Hollingsworth, Jay Frierson and Jamar Jones at tackle, linebackers Hayden Maygro, Quentin Wilfawn and Jacquan Webb and C.J. Terrell, Naziah Stamps, Jacquanzi Johnson and Drew Bianco in the secondary. The Chargers’ first touchdown came on a 65-yard pass from Bianco to Barry Flowers. The score remained 6-0 at the half and then Oxford tacked on a defensive touchdown when Pegues recovered a fumble he caused and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.
The Chargers then ran out the remainder of the clock thanks to important catches from Hiram Wadlington, Flowers and Johnson. Oxford (4-0-1 overall) returns to action against Lafayette on Oct. 9. (September 26, 2012, Page 7)
