Freshman running backs Jaylen Walton and I’Tavius Mathers continued to stand out (Freeze said he’s “crazy” about the two backs), while sophomore receiver Donte Moncrief made perhaps the play of the game, hauling in a touchdown with a defender draped over him in the back left corner of the end zone.
Freeze said he was encouraged by the progress he has seen from Ole Miss’ offensive line.
GETTING CLEARED: The university announced Friday that highly touted defensive end Channing Ward has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse to join the Rebels. The former Aberdeen standout was the last player the Rebels were waiting on to report to preseason camp. Below is a portion of Ole Miss’ release regarding Ward:
The Ole Miss football team got great news Friday shortly after practice ended, when it learned that one of its most heralded recruits, Channing Ward has been cleared by the NCAA to join the program. The Under Armour All-American from Aberdeen joined the team in the afternoon.
“I’m so excited for Channing and his family,” said Rebel head coach Hugh Freeze. “He is a tremendous young man, and it’s great to finally have him here with us. It was a long process, but we were confident throughout that he had done everything necessary to be cleared.
“Obviously he has missed a couple weeks of practice, and our staff is going to work hard to quickly bring him up to speed. We’ll have to wait and see how quickly he gets acclimated, but he certainly has the talent to be a factor this season.”
Ward was on the sideline during today’s scrimmage, wearing a blue No. 11 jersey, but was not in pads and did not participate. (August 18, 2012)
