Lafayette’s middle school football teams got the 2012 season off to a good start with two wins over Senatobia on Tuesday night.
The seventh-grade Commodores defeated the Warriors 22-6, while the eighth-grade Commodores won 16-14 in the nightcap.
Luke Higginbottom put Lafayette ahead for good with a 16-yard run for a touchdown in the first quarter of the seventh-grade game.
Higginbottom then scored on a 72-yard run. The 2-point conversion was added by Nick Onsby. In the third quarter, Brandon Curry added a 1-yard run for the ‘Dores while Onsby added the 2-point run. Senatobia’s lone score came on a 78-yard run with 38 seconds left in the contest. Coach Glenn Williams said he was pleased with the overall effort of his team. In the eighth-grade contest, Tyler Williams put Lafayette up 6-0 with a 1-yard run at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter. Williams then added the 2-point play. Lafayette led 8-0 at the half before Senatobia pulled to within two midway through the third quarter.
The Commodores then put the game out of reach with a 55-yard run from Atarius Owens as well as a 2-point conversion run at the 2:30 mark of the third quarter. Williams said his older group had a good effort but needed to show improvement in the second game of the year against Grenada. Those two contests with the Chargers will be on the road Tuesday starting with the seventh-grade contest at 5 p.m. (August 29, 2012, Page 7)
