Annual Crosstown Classic still on as planned

Tonight’s annual Crosstown Classic football game between the fifth-ranked Lafayette Commodores and the Oxford Chargers at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field remained a go as of this morning. OHS coach Johnny Hill had another meeting with local emergency management authorities who went over weather conditions that were expected to be in play at kickoff.

Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7 and will be broadcast on Fox Sports South as part of the C Spire sponsored “Bright Lights” football package.

Heavy rain associated with Hurricane Isaac, which was heading north through the state of Louisiana after making landfall in the southern part of the state Tuesday evening, had drenched southern Mississippi and rain is expected to hit the Lafayette County area mid-morning and continue for the next 36 hours. Hill said he was told the county is expected to receive between an 1-2 inches of rain.

The threat of tornadoes, unlike in the southern part of the state, is not expected to be likely by the time the bulk of the system makes it way through North Mississippi. (August 30, 2012, Page 8)
