Oxford’s seventh-grade Chargers started their home schedule with a 28-28 tie against Clarksdale Tuesday evening. Oxford led 16-14 at the half.
The game was tied at 22 after the third quarter and both teams scored a touchdown in the fourth. Demariae Burt had two touchdowns in the game. The first covered 6 yards, while the second went for 15. Andres Pegues scored on a 25-yard fumble recovery, while Drew Bianco ended the scoring for the Chargers with a 2-yard run. Bianco also added a 2-point run after Pegues’ score.
“I’m proud of the way we kept our composure when bad things happened and we kept finding a way to put the ball in the end zone,” Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said. “Clarksdale had some fantastic athletes and we competed well and played hard. We have a great bunch of kids and I was proud of our effort. Defensively we had several big stops especially on the 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter, but we also had three defensive breakdowns that cost us.”
Hardwick credited the running of Burt, the play of Bianco, who had good throws at quarterback and several good reads on the option, while Barry Flowers was credited with a catch that covered almost 50 yards. Hogan Linzy was praised for his play at center and at defensive end, while Will Hollingsworth and Pegues played exceptional on defense. Oxford will be back in action Thursday at home against South Panola. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (August 29, 2012, Page 7)
