Aberdeen DE Ward cleared to play

BLOG — First-year Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze can breathe a little easier today after learning former Aberdeen standout defensive end Channing Ward was cleared academically to play for the Rebels in 2012.Ward confirmed the news today via text message. He said he was “excited and relieved” about being cleared to begin his freshman year at Ole Miss. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Ward, a Under Armour All-American this past season, was one of two players who had not been cleared academically and he did not attend one of two summer school sessions. (South Panola LB Temario Strong remains the only uncleared signee from the 2012 class at this point).

Ward said in a story reported in the EAGLE last week that he was confident in his academic plan and that “it was a working process and that he would be ready for the start of summer camp.” He also said he had been working out with the rest of the Ole Miss team since June 1 and that he had been getting stronger and faster in anticipation for the upcoming season.

Ward is the most highly recruited player to sign with Freeze this past year and he is expected to push for a starting position along the defensive line from the first day of summer camp. (July 17, 2012)
