Highlighted by a no-hitter from pitcher Hunter Roth on Saturday, the Oxford Chargers went 3-1 in the Union University Tournament held in Jackson, Tenn., over the weekend.
Roth was one out away from recording a perfect game but he was denied due to an error in the outfield. Roth finished with 10 strikeouts in the Chargers’ 4-0 win over Jackson Northside, the second of three straight wins. Oxford concluded the tournament with an 8-1 over Trinity Christian. After losing the tournament opener, 6-5 to Crockett County, the Chargers beat Jackson Christian 6-2 on Friday. In the victory over Trinity Christian, Henry Webb paced the Chargers’ offense with two hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Jack McClure also contributed two RBIs and a double, while Michael Bianco and Aundrel Turner each drove in a run. Noland Parham earned the victory, while Pittman Phillips pitched the final inning in relief.
In Roth’s victory, Webb had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs, while Jason Barber had a triple and an RBI. Against Jackson Christian, Webb collected two of the Chargers’ four hits and drove in a run. Turner had the biggest hit of the day — a triple — and finished with three RBIs. Steven Whitfield earned the complete-game victory, recording eight strikeouts while only allowing two hits. In the loss to Crockett County, the Chargers committed three errors and gave up four of the six runs in the first inning. Bianco led Oxford with two hits, including a double. Tyler Hallam and Phillips each had doubles as Oxford collected eight hits overall. Jason Barber started the game and and suffered the loss after logging 5.2 innings and six strikeouts.
