Swindoll, Elliott top teammates for title

RIDGELAND — It seemed to be hard for members of the Oxford High tennis team to pick a boys doubles team to root for in Tuesday’s Class 5A individual tennis championship. Thanks to a new tournament format created this year by the MHSAA, the Chargers’ two boys doubles team that qualified for the individual tournament faced off against one another in the championship match.

Will Swindoll and Baxter Elliott ended up winning the title for OHS by defeating teammates Robert Nance and Andrew Mullen 6-2, 6-2 at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. The victory was the crowning achievement for the Chargers in the two-day tournament that was extended deep into the night Monday due to rain that hit the Metro Jackson area.

Oxford ended up qualifying 12 players for the tournament, with five advancing to the semifinals.

OHS coach Louis Nash, like the rest of the team, had seen the two boys match up before in practice. The difference was the prize awaiting the winner and Nash said he didn’t get any satisfaction from seeing one win over the other. (May 9, 2012, Page 6)
