A game filled with mistakes was almost erased by the Oxford Chargers’ best offensive inning of their MHSAA Class 5A quarterfinal series with Hernando Saturday night at Edwin Moak Field. Trailing by seven runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Chargers scored four runs with two outs to get within three of the Tigers.
Oxford had James Lear and William Elliott on second and first when Henry Webb stepped to the plate with a chance to tie the game with one swing. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Hernando shifted its infield defense just before Webb lined a ball up the middle of the field that was fielded by second baseman Scott Pala, who then threw to first for the third out.
The 9-6 victory for the Tigers (23-7 overall) advanced them to the 5A North Half title series against New Hope, while the Chargers’ season came to an end at 19-12. (May 7, 2012, Page 9)
