Rebels finish up spring with overtime thriller

Hugh Freeze knew his first spring game as Ole Miss’ football coach couldn’t end in a tie. Instead of the annual BancorpSouth Grove Bowl ending in a 17-17 deadlock Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Freeze gave each squad a chance to score in an overtime setting.

The Red team, led by junior college transfer quarterback Bo Wallace, ended up defeating the Blue squad 24-23 in dramatic fashion when they held Randall Mackey out of the end zone on a two-point conversion attempt run.

Wallace put the Red ahead when he hit Donte Moncrief for a 23-yard touchdown pass the first series of the overtime period. Mackey then got the Blue within a point when he found Ja-Mes Logan for a 25-yard touchdown pass on the squad’s first play in overtime. Instead of kicking an extra point to extend the game, the two-point run was called resulting in Mackey being stood up at the 1-yard line. (April 23, 2012, Page 1B)
