Patience pays off for Ole Miss’ Gatlin

Especially early in the season, John Gatlin could often be seen well after the final out of any particular game was made, jogging out of the Ole Miss dugout, inserting headphones into his ears and jogging from the left field foul pole to the right field foul pole and back.

To Gatlin, a sparsely used transfer from Itawamba Community College, the extra work was necessary in order to remain in game-shape should he be called upon.

It took nearly 33 games, but this past weekend Gatlin made his first two starts of the season at Georgia and made the most of them by going 2-for-5 with two run-scoring doubles. (April 20, 2012, Page 6A)
