There will be a new champion in Class 5A baseball this year. The Oxford Chargers made sure of that when they pulled off a miraculous come-from-behind 8-7 win over the Ridgeland Titans in eight innings Friday night at Edwin Moak Field.
A night after Oxford rallied to defeat the Titans (20-8 overall) on their home field, the Chargers made an even bigger comeback in front of their home crowd. OHS (19-10) erased a 7-1 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then forcing extra innings by scoring a single run in the seventh. Then, with two outs, OHS senior James Lear delivered the knockout punch with an RBI-single up the middle to win the contest and set off a celebration nobody will forget for a while.
Moments after Oxford coach Chris Baughman gave out game balls to the entire team, he fought back tears of joy describing how proud he was of his team. (April 30, 2012, Page 7)
