Jeff Nelson’s nine-year legacy as Lafayette High’s Athletic Director may be coming to an end at the end of school year, but his peers felt like his contributions, both in the past and recently, were significant enough to honor him with an award that will remind him of his accomplishments during retirement.
The Mississippi Association of Coaches informed Nelson over the weekend that he been selected to receive the MAC AD of the Year award for 2011-12. Monday, Nelson deflected praise for winning the award and said he was proud for the school more than anything else. He also said the willingness of the school board to add sports and support from his former principal, Adam Pugh, who is now the district superintendent, made the success achieved over the last nine years possible as much as anything.
