Water Valley’s stay in the MHSAA’s Class 3A softball playoffs came to an unfortunate end Saturday as the Mantachie Lady Mustangs won the decisive third game of the opening-round series 14-8 in Water Valley.
The Lady Blue Devils, the No. 2 seed from Division 3-3A this year, forced a third game by beating Mantachie 7-6 in the second game.
Mantachie won the series opener 12-2. Mantachie collected 15 hits in the third-game victory and was aided by three WVHS errors.
Mantachie scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take control in the contest and then tacked on five more in the second inning.
Haley Vance led Water Valley’s offense with four RBIs and two hits, including a double, in the setback.
A.K. Burris also contributed three RBIs for the Lady Blue Devils.
In the 7-6 win, WVHS was out-hit 12-10, but the Lady Blue Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held Mantachie scoreless in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory.
Mallory Washington and Tonya Phillips each drove in two runs in the win, while Tyler Epes earned the complete-game victory as the Lady Blue Devils’ pitcher. (April 23, 2012, Page 3B)
