Lafayette tennis splits in tournament

The Lafayette tennis team had a successful weekend at the East Misssissippi Tournament hosted in Meridian.

The Commodores (5-3 overall) fell to Newton County 5-2 before rebounding to top Pascagoula 6-1.

Against Newton County, Jacob Roberts won the boys singles point 6-0, 6-4, and the duo of Ashley Smith and Lauren Cullen claimed the No. 1 girls doubles point 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Mallory Davis dropped the No. 1 girls singles match 6-1, 6-1.

Brett Bowen and Nathan Hollis lost the No. 1 boys doubles point 6-1, 6-1, while Hunter Knight and Garrett Reed fell at the No. 2 boys doubles spot 6-3, 7-5.

Brittany Mann and Abbey Pate fell in the No. 2 girls doubles point 7-5, 6-4, while the mixed doubles duo of Kathryn Owen and Tanner Odom lost 6-2, 6-4.

Against Pascagoula, Lafayette rebounded nicely.

Roberts took the boys singles point 6-2, 6-1, and Davis earned a win in the girls singles match 6-0, 6-3.

Knight and Reed combined to earn a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 11-9 victory in the No. 1 doubles match, while Hollis and Odom eaned the No. 2 boys doubles point 4-6, 6-4, (10-8).

Smith and Cullen won the No. 1 girls doubles point 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) and Hayley Hamann and Pate took the No. 2 girls doubles point 6-1, 6-0.

Lafayette’s lone loss vs. Pascagoula came in the mixed doubles match, where Bowen and Owen were bested 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 12-10.

Lafayette returns to action today, hosting Tupelo at 4 p.m. (April 2, 2012, Page 10)
