Lafayette got off to a great start in the Class 4A playoffs Monday morning with a 6-1 win over Kosciusko on the road. Lafayette swept the doubles action to gain the match win, while Mallory Davis peformed well in her singles match. Davis defeated Jessica Reynolds 6-0, 6-2 to gain the victory for LHS. Kosciusko’s lone win came in boys singles as Patrick Adams defeated Nathan Hollis 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the No. 1 boys team of Hunter Knight and Jacob Roberts shut out Ben Patterson and Joe Patterson 6-0, 6-0, while the No. 2 boys team of Barron Pruitt and Garrett Reed blanked Noah Frank and Sam Cain 6-0, 6-0.
The No. 1 girls doubles team of Lauren Cullen and Ashley Smith also won their match 6-0, 6-0 when the topped Brittany Barton and Quintessa Roby. The No. 2 girls match was the more competitive.
Kosciusko’s Erin McCain and Liz Petro defeated Lafayette’s Brittany Mann and Abbey Pate 6-2 in the first set before Mann and Pate won 6-1 in the second and 10-3 in the tiebreaker. In mixed doubles, Lafayette’s Kathryn Owen and Brett Bowen lost the first set 6-4 but recovered to win 6-4 (11-9) to earn the win.
Lafayette returns to action Thursday at home at 4 p.m. against Pontotoc. (April 24, 2012, Page 10)
