Oxford’s tennis team came to play Friday afternoon in the MHSAA Class 5A title match hosted at Avent Park. The Chargers advanced to their fifth straight appearance in the MHSAA state title match in Jackson by defeating Ridgeland 6-1.
OHS coach Louis Nash was very pleased with the way his Chargers (18-1 overall) competed against the Titans.
“Some days all of the Chargers come to play. Today was one of those days,” Nash said.
The most competitive match of the day that went Oxford’s way came in boys singles where Quinn Elliott beat Cullen McDough 6-4, 6-4.
Ridgeland’s lone victory came at girls singles where Mia Kent topped Ann Marie Edlin 6-1, 6-2.
Oxford’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Will Swindoll and Baxter Elliott beat Jacob Hawkins and Michael Nguyen 6-1, 6-0. The No. 2 boys doubles Robert Nance and Andrew Mullen also defeated their opponents, Turner Lott and Jack Luyrer, by the same score.
Oxford’s No. 1 girls doubles team of Kara Rose and Embrey Inman topped Keayln Edwards and Madison Walker 6-0, 6-2. The No. 2 girls doubles team of Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis defeated Kittey Edwards and Cyan Jones 6-1, 6-3. The mixed doubles team of Cari Hansen and Judson Watson beat Brittany Weathersby and Wade Grady 6-1, 6-0. In an additional match, Callan Shinall beat Trey Martin 7-6, 6-1.
The team title match will be played at Brighton Park in Clinton on May 9 against the winner of the South match that includes Stone County and Pascagoula. (April 30, 2012, Page 7)
