Chargers have no trouble with Pontotoc

A couple extra days to prepare for Oxford didn’t matter for Pontotoc, which lost 7-0 to the Chargers Friday morning.

The match started Tuesday but had to be postponed due to rain. In boys singles, Andrew Mullen defeated Ryan Henry 6-1, 6-4, while Ann Marie Edlin beat Kristen Pennington 6-2, 6-2 in girls singles. The No. 1 boys doubles of Robert Nance and Baxter Elliott took down Piecen Burchfield and Cameron Timmons 6-3, 6-4. The No. 2 boys doubles team of Quinn Elliott and Judson Watson blanked its opponents, Braydon Timmons and Jacob Hatcher, 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 1 girls doubles team of Kara Rose and Embrey Inman topped Ivy Robbins and Anna Chrestman 6-1, 6-3, while the No. 2 girls doubles team of Emily Domke and Cari Hansen defeated Anna Rosebaum and Shannon Montgomery 6-3, 7-5. The most competitive match of the day was in mixed doubles as Oxford’s Arlis Williams and Sarah Nash lost the first set, 6-2, to Anna Wing and Jacob Fergerson but rallied to win the second set 6-4 and then take the tiebreaker 11-9. In extra matches, Oxford’s Joseph McQueen and Eliza Williams beat Blake Gregory and Sarah Hill 8-5.

In the other victory for Oxford, Madison Cobb and Matt Forgette topped Austin Anderson and Lauren Clayton 6-2, 6-2. Oxford (11-1 overall) returns to action today in a Division 2-5A contest at New Hope. The Chargers  then return home to host Tupelo Tuesday at 4 p.m. (April 9, 2012, Page 9)
