Chargers capture division title

Oxford boys golf coach Steve Herring couldn’t hide the pride he felt for his Chargers after Tuesday’s victory in the Division 2-5A golf tournament. The Chargers won their first team title under Herring at the Columbus Country Club by grinding out shots on a challenging course.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of this group and the way they played,” Herring said. “They grinded. They came through with some tough conditions. They knew it was going to be after playing our practice round there on Sunday and they just kept making shots.”
Oxford finished first with a 339. New Hope, the defending Class 5A champions, was second with a 346. Hernando followed with a 353, while Saltillo shot a 369. The top three teams all qualified to compete in the 5A state tournament in two weeks at Columbus CC.
Turner Arnold led the Chargers with a round of 80. Ward Toler shot an 81. John Graeber and Ben Hubbard finished in a tie for third with rounds of 89, while Ethan Holmes shot a 92. (April 25, 2012, Page 6)
