The Oxford Chargers moved a step closer to winning a fifth straight Class 5A state tennis title on Tuesday with a 7-0 win over Starkville on the road.
The victory improved the Chargers to 17-1 overall and set up a date with Ridgland on Friday in the 5A North Half title match.
Baxter Elliott defeated Ethan Musser 6-2, 6-2 in boys singles, while Ann Marie Edlin rallied to defeat Emily Turner 6-4, 2-6 (10-8) in girls singles action. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Robert Nance and Andrew Mullen beat Aaron Rem and Jack Bryam 6-3, 6-1.
The No. 2 team of Will Swindoll and Quinn Elliott topped Brian Xu and Lewis Maynard 6-2, 6-2. Oxford’s No. 1 girls doubles team of Kara Rose and Embrey Inman went three sets with their opponents, Hannah Laird and Dasha Bondernil, 6-4, 2-6 (10-8).
The No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis defeated Ashley Albritton and Christine Mazzola 6-2, 7-5, while the mixed doubles team of Cari Hansen and Judson Watson topped Richard Hill and Mikala Taylor 7-5, 6-4.
