Led by the speed of Mariah Buford, the Lafayette Lady Commodores finished second in Saturday’s Region 1-4A track meet at Pontotoc. The Lady Warriors won the title by totaling 202 points. Lafayette was second with 119 points, one more than third-place finisher Corinth.
The Commodores finished eighth out of 10 schools with 32 points. Pontotoc won the boys meet with 176.5 points, while Rosa Fort and Corinth were second and third with 93 and 78 points respectively.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the upcoming 4A North Half meet. Ten points were awarded for first-place finishes. Second-, third- and fourth-place finishes garner eight, six and five points respectively.
Buford won the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.25 seconds. She also won the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 0.4 seconds. Janae Westbrook won the 300 hurdles with a 51.03, while the 4×400 relay team, comprised of Buford, Peyton Hamann, Briana Everett and Alisha Hickinbottom, was first with a 4:19.
