SPORTS BLOG: WATER VALLEY — Three home runs and a nearly complete-game effort on the mound from Taylor King earned Water Valley a 10-8 win against Winona, the No. 2 seed from Region 3, Friday night at Blue Devil Field in the opening game of the best-of-three series in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A baseball playoffs.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, April 21) in Winona. If necessary, Game 3 will be played immediately after.
Austin Hodge got the Blue Devils, the No. 3 seed from Region 2, on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left to cut the Tigers lead to 2-1.
An inning later, Cole Camp connected with a grand slam over the left-field fence to highlight a four-run second inning to put Water Valley ahead 5-2.
After the Tigers tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning, Water Valley capitalized on two Winona errors to go back on top at 7-5 before Chris Conard hit a two-run home run to left to make the score 9-5.
Tyler Kimzey drove in the final run of the night for the Blue Devils, when he scored Taylor Smith on a double to right field.
King earned the win on the mound for the Blue Devils in a 137-pitch effort. The senior right-hander threw 6.2 innings eight runs (four earned) on seven hits, while striking out 10 and walking three.
Camp, Hodge and Conard all finished with multiple hits for the Blue Devils (15-11 overall), who collected 12 hits as a team.
