Big innings lead WVHS past Tigers

WINONA — Water Valley coach Kary Bridges wanted his team to “add on” heading into the final inning against Winona on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils were a little more advanced in their mathematics though, as they first added and then multiplied.

Water Valley scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Tigers 17-3 at Tigers Field and sweep Winona, the No. 2 seed from Region 3, in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A baseball playoffs.

The Blue Devils defeated the Tigers 10-8 in the opening game of the series Friday at Blue Devil Field. With the series win, Water Valley advances to play Kossuth, the No. 1 seed from Region 1, in the second round.

The Blue Devils’ big inning came after the Tigers cut the lead in half at 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Taylor King hit a double off the right-field wall to advance Austin Hodge, who walked to lead off the inning, from first to third before Chris Conard came to the plate.

Conard, who was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts before the at-bat, sent a fly ball to right field, deep enough to score Hodge from third, but Tigers’ right fielder Mikel Sykes air-mailed the throw in allowing King to score and start the big inning for the Blue Devils (16-11 overall). (April 23, 2012, Page 4B)
