No. 16 Rebels hold on to top Redhawks, take series

BLOG: It all comes down to today.

After errors and an early deficit cost the No. 16 Rebels in Game 1 of the three-game series on Friday, Ole Miss came roaring back on Saturday to split the series and set up a winner-takes-all game today at Oxford-University Stadium.

First pitch is set for just after 1:30 p.m.MORE FIRSTS: Saturday, Austin Knight made his first collegiate start due to the fractured pinky finger of Will Allen. Today, Jake Overbey, 2011 draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies and younger brother of Preston Overbey, will make his first collegiate start at shortstop. In five games, the younger Overbey is 0-for-3 with one walk, one run scored and two strikeous.

OLE MISS 1, Miami (Ohio) 0 (B2): Jake Overbey got the scoring started, scoring older brother Preston Overbey from third on a single to left field.

 OLE MISS 2, Miami (Ohio) 0 (B6): Andrew Mistone‘s sacrifice fly to left field in the sixth, scored Alex Yarbrough from third.

Ole Miss 2, MIAMI (OHIO) 1 (T9): The Redhawks got to Ole Miss closer Brett Huber in the ninth, tallying three consecutive singles to lead off the ninth. The third, from Bryce Redeker, scored Ryan Brenner. Following a mound visit, Huber, with a lot of help from his defense, got the next three batters in succession to preserve the win. No play was bigger than the diving stab by third baseman Mistone on a scorched ball off the bat of Alex Johnson. Mistone’s play marked the second out of the frame.

BY THE NUMBERS: Ole Miss starter Mike Mayers (1-1 overall) earned his first win of the season, pitching seven scoreless innings. The Ohio native struck out five while walking one and allowing four hits… Huber earned his fourth save with the one-inning performance… Shawn Marquardt  (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. He also struck out two… Ole Miss recorded just six hits in the game, with each of  Yarbrough, Preston Overbey, Auston Bousfield, Jake Overbey, Mistone and Austin Knight recording one apiece.

BACK AT IT: Ole Miss returns to the diamond on Tuesday to host UT-Martin at 6:30 p.m. Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said he was unsure who would make the start. (March 4, 2012)
