———SCORING SUMMARY———

OLE MISS 6, Houston 0 (B1): Ole Miss wasted no time getting its spring break started right. The Rebels scored six runs on eight singles in the first inning off of Cougar ace Jared Ray. Alex Yarbrough, Matt Snyder, Andrew Mistone, Zach Kirksey, Auston Bousfield and Austin Knight each had a single. Leadoff hitter Tanner Mathis had two singles.

OLE MISS 8, Houston 0 (B5): Yarbrough added to Ole Miss’ lead in the fifth with a two-run double into the left field corner. Mathis and Will Jamison scored on Yarbrough’s fourth double of the season. Mathis reached base by walking for the 14th time this season.

———BY THE NUMBERS———

Ole Miss starter Bobby Wahl improved to 3-0 on the season with six scoreless innings against the Cougars. Wahl also struck out 10, walked three and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Aaron Greenwood and Hawtin Buchanan combined to pitch three scoreless innings in relief… Ray fell to 1-1 on the year after surrendering six runs on 10 hits in one inning of work (Ray allowed two singles to lead off the second but did not record an out)… Seven Rebels (11-2 overall) recorded hits against the Cougars (6-7). Yarbrough led the team at the plate with a 3-for-5 evening. He also had two RBIs and scored once. Mathis had a 2-for-4 day at the plate and walked for the 14th time this season. The junior outfielder walked 15 times in each of the last two seasons.

———OTHER INFORMATION———

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said injured sophomore catcher Will Allen is progressing well from his fractured pinky finger on his throwing hand and could play tomorrow if the team needed him to, although it’s not likely… Senior shortstop Blake Newalu missed tonight’s game after “breaking a team rule” according to Bianco. The Rebel skipper said Newalu will play on Saturday against Houston… Starting right fielder Senquez Golson was pulled after not running out a grounder in the first inning. Bianco said the team was warned earlier in the season after a similar incident that the next player to not hustle down to first base would be pulled, so Golson was replaced by Jamison.

First pitch Saturday is set for 1:30 p.m. (March 9, 2012)
