Lafayette defeated Cleveland, last year’s Class 4A state champions, 6-1 Monday afternoon.
The Commodores (3-1 overall) won both singles matches and all but the No. 2 girls doubles team. Jacob Roberts topped Will Hardman 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in boys singles, while Mallory Davis beat Frances Varner 6-1, 6-1 in girls singles. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Hunter Knight and Garrett Reed blanked Carson Childers and Parker Joost 6-0, 6-0, while the No. 2 boys team of Brett Brown and Nathan Hollis won 6-1, 6-0 over Daniel Woo and Austin Joost. The No. 1 girls doubles team of Lauren Cullen and Brittany Mann beat Merrill Dean Rogers and Lorra Rogers 6-2, 6-1. The mixed doubles team of Barron Pruitt and Ashley Smith defeated Avery Johnson and Nick Bosworth 6-0, 6-1. Cleveland’s lone win came at No. 2 girls doubles where Mary Janous and Shelby Safford beat Kathryn Owens and Abbey Pate 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
In a match played with Madison Central on Friday, the Commodores lost 6-1 on the John Leslie Courts. Davis earned the lone victory for the Commodores when she beat Caroline Loveless 3-6, 7-5 (1-0). Madison’s Brighton Lowther topped Bowen 6-0, 6-0 in boys singles. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Reegan Barkley and Coker Wilson beat Hunter Knight and Jacob Roberts 6-0, 6-4, while the No. 2 team of Rami Jamilia and Connor Willson beat Reed and Hollis 6-1, 6-1. The No. 1 girls doubles team of Shelby Zachry and Ginger Dixon beat Cullen and Smith 6-2, 6-4, while the No. 2 boys team of Yasmin Hegazy and Delaney Taylor beat Pate and Hayley Hamman 6-0, 6-1. In mixed doubles, Mary Evelyn Carole and Daniel Pendleton beat Pruitt and Mann 6-1, 7-6. LHS returns to action Thursday against Tunica-Rosa Fort. (March 27, 2012, Page 12)
